Two years running and more than double the results! BC’s second annual Spring Hope Food Drive was by all respects, a resounding success. Organized by LandlordBC, the Spring Hope Food Drive was graciously carried out by a committed group of UBC student volunteers, canvassing door-to-door with the help of dedicated building management teams such as Hollyburn Properties.
Spring Hope is unique. The only food drive of its kind to specifically target apartment dwellers, the goal: to stock food bank shelves during the lull between Christmas and Easter, when donations are critically low. Spring Hope is an amazing opportunity for housing providers and tenants to work together to positively impact our community, and initiatives such as this allow multi-family building residents to make a difference in the lives of families in need.
And how much fun! The joy, compassion and energy from everyone involved in this event was clear. Community partner Modo the Car Coop generously provided transportation and ignited what is sure to be a long-standing partnership between the organizers and the coop. Altogether, over 12,000 pounds of food was collected in support of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Hollyburn was able to generate almost 6,000 pounds, nearly half of the total result.
“Hollyburn buildings had a tremendous amount success collecting food bank donations this year. I’d like to thank our residents for their generosity and our building managers for all of their help and hard work in executing the event,” said Allan Wasel, Hollyburn General Manager in BC. “The care and commitment really shows.”
Ontario’s long-standing version of Spring Hope is currently in its 12th year. The event takes place at Hollyburn Toronto buildings on Tuesday, April 8th.

Be a climate ninja this Saturday and join Hollyburn apartments in an International Earth Hour #momentofdarkness. Why? Because a record 157 countries and territories are participating in reducing their energy consumption by turning off non-essential lights for one hour.
WWF’s Earth Hour has evolved into a global message of awareness regarding climate change and the importance of energy conservation. Municipalities are playing a leading role and taking action through transportation, waste management, energy efficiency, conservation and renewable energy initiatives. Last year, the City of Vancouver was named the Global Earth Hour Capital and altogether, British Columbians saved 136 megawatt hours of electricity—the equivalent of turning off more than 10 million LED light bulbs!

- Gaming… of the cardboard type. Consider also charades, hide and seek and fort-building
- Candlelit dinners and conversations with friends
- Take a nap, no one will notice

This food drive is unique. Spearheaded by LandlordBC, Spring Hope 2014 is an opportunity for landlords and residents to work together to help feed those in need. Food Bank supplies are critically low at this time of year—help us support those families that have come across hard times by donating canned goods, non-perishable food items and packaged foods to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.
Why is Hollyburn participating?
The Spring Hope event originated in Toronto 12 years ago and has since grown to become the largest door-to-door food drive in the country. It also represents the only one of its kind to specifically call apartment dwellers to action. Initiatives such as Spring Hope allow us all to actively support and positively impact the communities in which we live.
Date: Wednesday & Thursday, March 19th & 20th, 2014
Time: Between 6-9pm

How: UBC student volunteers and your Resident Manager will be canvassing door-to-door

Feeling excluded, alienated or judged by your peers is no laughing matter. It’s called bullying and it’s not a joke. In fact, the effects of bullying can have life-long traumatizing effects for victims. Bullying takes place in our schools, workplaces, homes and on the Internet. Widely publicized tragedies in the past few years have drawn more attention to a matter that has thrived in silence for far too long.
In November 2013, WorkSafeBC adopted new legislation requiring employers to take steps to eliminate bullying and harassment in the workplace; a monumental stride for this cause. Join Hollyburn Properties on Wednesday, February 26th, by wearing PINK in support of anti-bullying on Pink Shirt Day. It’s a simple yet effective way to create awareness and make some noise. Other ways to get involved:

The original event was organized by 2 students in Nova Scotia, David and Travis, who in 2007 stood up for a male student who was bullied for wearing pink on the first day of school. In sympathy for this Grade 9 boy, David and Travis bought and distributed 50 pink shirts to male students the following day, protesting against the harassment and sending a message to schoolmates that bullying would not be tolerated in their community.
“I learned that two people can come up with an idea, run with it, and it can do wonders,” says Travis, 17, who organized the pink protest. “Finally, someone stood up for a weaker kid.” (Globe & Mail, 2007)
