This food drive is unique. Spearheaded by LandlordBC, Spring Hope 2014 is an opportunity for landlords and residents to work together to help feed those in need. Food Bank supplies are critically low at this time of year—help us support those families that have come across hard times by donating canned goods, non-perishable food items and packaged foods to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.
Why is Hollyburn participating?
The Spring Hope event originated in Toronto 12 years ago and has since grown to become the largest door-to-door food drive in the country. It also represents the only one of its kind to specifically call apartment dwellers to action. Initiatives such as Spring Hope allow us all to actively support and positively impact the communities in which we live.
Date: Wednesday & Thursday, March 19th & 20th, 2014
Time: Between 6-9pm
Where: At your Hollyburn building
How: UBC student volunteers and your Resident Manager will be canvassing door-to-door
Check out this video from last year’s food drive:
Donations may be delivered in advance to the box in your building lobby, or left in a bag outside your door on the night of the event. Opt-out forms are available for those who do not wish to participate. Please visit www.springhopefooddrive.ca or see your Resident Manager for more details.
**The Toronto Spring Hope food drive takes place April 8th, 2014. More info coming soon!

Feeling excluded, alienated or judged by your peers is no laughing matter. It’s called bullying and it’s not a joke. In fact, the effects of bullying can have life-long traumatizing effects for victims. Bullying takes place in our schools, workplaces, homes and on the Internet. Widely publicized tragedies in the past few years have drawn more attention to a matter that has thrived in silence for far too long.
In November 2013, WorkSafeBC adopted new legislation requiring employers to take steps to eliminate bullying and harassment in the workplace; a monumental stride for this cause.Join Hollyburn Properties on Wednesday, February 26th, by wearing PINK in support of anti-bullyingon Pink Shirt Day. It’s a simple yet effective way to create awareness and make some noise. Other ways to get involved:
Purchase an official Pink T-shirt at London Drugs, for $10. Proceeds go to support anti-bullying programs in BC
Share this Pink Shirt Day Public Service Announcement on your social media:
Challenge your friends and co-workers to commit to a bully-free lifestyle and wear pink on Feb. 26th
Upload pictures of you, your friends and co-workers wearing pink and tag it with #pinkshirtday and mention @pinkshirtday—or e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org
The original event was organized by 2 students in Nova Scotia, David and Travis, who in 2007 stood up for a male student who was bullied for wearing pink on the first day of school. In sympathy for this Grade 9 boy, David and Travis bought and distributed 50 pink shirts to male students the following day, protesting against the harassment and sending a message to schoolmates that bullying would not be tolerated in their community.
“I learned that two people can come up with an idea, run with it, and it can do wonders,” says Travis, 17, who organized the pink protest. “Finally, someone stood up for a weaker kid.” (Globe & Mail, 2007)

Change is constant, inevitable and comfortable with it or not, the process by which we grow as individuals. When it comes to moving, however, that change is often accompanied by unforeseen charges. Whether relocating to another city or moving across town, anyone looking to progress to a new space needs to consider the hidden costs.
Love your neighbourhood but don’t love your apartment? (Or the other way around)? Whatever the reason, moving homes must take into account more than just the cost of new rent and utilities in your monthly budget.
Below is a list of some of the more common costs of moving from one place to another. While each cost may range from nominal to extravagant —the total often adds up, potentially driving the move to your dream apartment right out of budget. Not to worry, though—we’ve got you covered with a few creative and practical tips on how to offset those expenses:
Downsize: First off, unload! Sell unnecessary items on Craigslist or Kijiji. Less items to move and some money in your pocket to subsidize the transition.
Gently used clothing or household items to donate? Consider contributing to our long-standing community partners at Covenant House.
Boxes & packing materials: These seemingly mundane items, such as cardboard, bubble wrap, bungee cords, packing tape, markers, etc. can seriously add up if you are using a moving company, that will likely charge for each additional item you require.
Instead, try sourcing all items yourself, such as recycled boxes for free from your local grocery or liquor store.
If you prefer re-usable green boxes, go with our friends at Frogbox. Hollyburn’s partnership with this great eco-friendly company means $ savings for you!
Storage: If your new home is smaller and selling certain items is not an option, you may need to rent a storage locker to keep your goods safe and warm. Storage is an added monthly cost that shouldn’t be underestimated. Luckily, Hollyburn residents have access to our partnership with Maple Leaf Self Storage and receive their 2nd month of storage in this world-class facility for free!
Moving: Often the single most expensive portion of the whole ordeal. Generally speaking, an average 700 sq. ft., 1 bedroom apartment costs $500 on the low end and $1000 on the high end to move. Of course, time of year, time of month and distance travelled are all factors which could up your estimate.
It’s not over yet, however. Upon arriving at your new home, don’t forget to consider:
Installation Fees: Cable, internet and phone providers often always charge a fee for transfer of services. Unfortunately, this cost is pretty much unavoidable. Must. Stay. Connected. At. All. Times.
Redirection of Mail: Don’t miss important mail. Ensure it follows you wherever you go with Canada Post’s Mail Forwarding service. Cost= from $51.95-$102.95.
Strata Fees: Paying to have an elevator wrapped on moving day. Cost= ~$150.
Laundry, parking, transportation, gym membership…: just a few more expenses to factor into the price of a move.
Don’t be discouraged. Moving can also be one of the most positive changes in your life. Itching to make the switch? Take a look at Hollyburn’s currently available rental apartments in Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Toronto—we might just have the perfect spot for you!
Whether you are a seasoned renter or leaving the family home in search of your first apartment, a reputable and reliable property management company is an indispensable asset in your pursuit.
Essentially, Hollyburn Properties’ entire business revolves around supporting our buildings, facilitating the moving experience and ensuring our residents are happy in their homes. From our live-in resident managers, maintenance staff, landscaping crew and administrative support, the whole company is committed to providing a positive and stress-free living community for our tenants.
The day to day operations of running a property are vast—a burden that many landlords are unable to undertake or maintain both physically and financially. You may discover that many landlords are disorganized, poor communicators, have unreliable response times, are unprepared to fix problems or invest in their properties, and are difficult to reach or possibly even live out of the country!
Property management companies such as Hollyburn have on-site building managers who juggle many roles, representing the point of contact for all matters related to your tenancy. This includes your suite, repairs, building maintenance, rent payments, parking, storage, laundry, neighbour disputes, referrals, insurance, lease agreements, etc.
In addition, Hollyburn renters can rely on their management company to go out of their way to invest in their buildings—improving accessibility, environmental efficiency, performing infrastructural upgrades as well as enhancing the cosmetic appearance –all while revitalizing the long-term rental stock of the neighbourhood.
In a nutshell, Hollyburn’s on-site managers strive to be:
1)Responsive to requests
2)Adaptable to situations
3)Committed to excellence
4)Accountable to residents
The human touch is equally as vital a component in a successful tenant-landlord relationship. Renting from a property management company ensures an entire team of professionals exist to support, mitigate and follow through on any issues or requests as soon as they arise, all while listening to the tenant and providing that personalized touch.
In sum, renting from a property manager is all about trust, performance and integrity. Consider researching companies in advance with your local Better Business Bureau. Hollyburn’s 11-year long A+ rating says it all!
Pleasant Manor is a quaint four storey walk-up in a lovely residential neighbourhood in midtown Toronto that surrounds a vibrant stretch of restaurants, cafés, and boutique shops. The building in popular Mount Pleasant, offers 13 studios and 15 1 bedroom apartments for rent, a welcome addition to Hollyburn’s growing rental community.
Hollyburn’s most recent acquisition, on the corner of Mount Pleasant and Millwood Road, features spacious suites with beautiful oak hardwood floors and double pane windows. There are several transit options (TTC bus stops, Eglinton subway station) directly outside of the building, making the entire city accessible from this prime location.
The building is situated across the street from the Davisville Tennis Club and within a two block vicinity to both Hodgson Senior Public School and Manor Montessori School. The area is teeming with eclectic specialty stores, including cupcake shops, chocolateries and bookstores, giving the neighbourhood and undeniable charm. Two independent cinemas, The Regent and the Mt. Pleasant, add art and culture to the magic of the area.
We look forward to introducing ourselves to the existing residents and to offering the same professionalism, quality, service and commitment to building management and maintenance as we strive to be recognized for across our national portfolio. For more details, please take a look at our building page. Suite and interior pictures coming soon!

Christmas may be over, but there’s no harm in keeping that tree around a few days longer. Breathe in its earthy aroma, relive the fond memories of family, friends and food and play with Santa’s deliveries, of course.
However, if you are keen on cleaning out the old to make way for the New Year then please consider returning your tree to the Scouts Xmas Tree Chip-Up event. The trees are chipped and recycled with all proceeds in support of youth in our community. Donations are also graciously accepted!
In addition, every customer of the Chip Up will receive a coupon booklet for savings at the commercial businesses in Hollyburn Plaza, the location of the event. Think Curves, chiropractors, cleaners and chicken strips!
